If you are interested in eccentric British operating practice, try this shot of rope worked incline haulage on the Bowes Railway as operated by the NCB in about 1970:

Part of it still exists as a preserved line..

Not in a particularly "good" area though, so they have suffered quite a bit of vandalism/arson over the years.
