I have forwarded to the Heritage Rail Alliance (HRA) several index sheets applicable to Alco Diesel Engine service publications. There are index sheets for the 11,000 series (Engine Related) Maintenance Instructions listed by MI number and also listed by subject. These are being posted in their member online library. Indexes for the other MI number series may follow in the future.

I also am working on an article that lists the development, topic scope, and number progression of the Alco service publications, similar in scope to the article on EMD service publications that was done for the RYPN articles section. Due to the inability to post new material to the RYPN articles section since 2008, this will eventually be posted on another suitable site that is capable of accepting and displaying it.

A recent addition to the Alco index postings on the HRA members library site is the Alco Equipment Bulletin (EB) #45B which is a 1960s index of their Locomotive Maintenance Manuals since the 1940s and their individual Maintenance Instructions grouped by number series. Recently a list of the applicable Bulletins for each of the Century Series locomotive models has been added to the library. This may be helpful for groups that have collected books of Maintenance Instructions and Bulletins over the years but have not been able to obtain the indexes or the listings of applicability by locomotive series.

That sounds like a tremendous resource. Would love to have a copy of all of the MIs.

Clarifying Mike's posting, the documents on the website are the various indexes, so that if you have individual MI's without an index you can identify how they relate to the various Alco products. There are many hundreds of individual topic MI's in the Alco 1960's technical document series alone. Many hundreds more in the earlier document series from the 1940s and 1950s. The indexes themselves are very hard to find, the group posted to the HRA site are the most complete set I have seen.

Alco used to sell the individual MI's for 10 to 25 cents each. Nowadays the best place to find a large collection of them at a reasonable price is on eBay. The price for railroad technical documents there has nose-dived lately. One Alco MI set I saw on eBay this year, that had a very reasonable starting bid request, finished the auction without any bids.

Be aware though, Alco did not put together their MI books the way EMD did. An EMD MI book usually contained a copy of everything they had on the shelf at the time of your buying the book, you then had to figure out which MI's pertained to your product using their index. In comparison, Alco usually sold their customer MI books that were specific to the customer's products. So if you had a Century 420 and ordered an MI book, they manually assembled and bound only the group of MI's specific to your locomotive type.
