I just noticed the T1 guys are having an open house next month on March 7. Anyone here planning on going? Would be cool to meet a few of you guys.

Looks like they are flanging the backhead that day.

This should be a great event for the T-1 Trust. The live forming of the backhead sheet for the new firebox should be particularly exciting to see happen before our very eyes.

I have been collecting a lot of info on the T1 and Poppet valves. I have shared all of it with the T1 build and they have been great about using all of it . It is by no means finished but here is the link to all that I have collected. I share this in hope that it will not be abused or changed in anyway

It has taken alot of work to get all of this and put it all in one place. As i get more I will post here as to more added .

Please feel free to message me with any question

Oh and the Niagara stuff is due to the use of Poppet valve on one loco

This is very nice to have all in one place, and accessible outside the T1 Trust technical repository.

You might want to retitle the patents so they fall in design (rather than 'chronological' which can be a little misleading at times) order: the original Caprotti patent is first, followed by the type A patents (I believe including Woodard's (note sp.) for the crosshead drive), then the type B rotary-cam patent, which is the system applied to ATSF 3752 according to Vernon Smith, then the 'type C' patent (which is Col. Townsend's) and then finally the Kirchhof '024 patent, which is actually for the "type D" meant to be applied as a kit to Army locomotives to make them easier for soldiers to 'drive'.

I'd also, for the sake of completeness, include the patents for British Caprotti (and perhaps Reidinger) and at least a discussion of Cossart drop valves (an interesting alternative to full poppet valves with some potential relief of reciprocating balance issues). I'd also -- for a one-stop location -- include the patent data (it's referenced on Dr. Richard Leonard's site) for the Berry Accelerator, and for the Langer balancer (assigned to Westinghouse) from 1947.

Another piece of 'Niagara' specific journalism that has relevance is the Le Massena article in Trains Magazine in the 1980s, which specifically described some of the design optimization Kiefer ordered as part of NYC 5500 for testing. What is highly interesting to me is that we have subsequently found the NYC C1a duplex order details from April 1945, and it appears that Kiefer clearly intended after seeing the results of the Lima K4 rebuild testing and four years of T1 experimentation to use piston valves on those locomotives, and yet the version of Franklin System he adopted for a locomotive with almost exactly the same boiler was type A with all its warts, at a time when continuous-contour shifting-cam RC was being demonstrated by Franklin as a 'better' solution than any OC poppet-valve actuation system. (For those who don't already know, the RC applied to the test T1 was a special order, 'type B-2', which differs in having bridges to the paired valves in the type A steam chests to actuate them as for three-valve regular type B without heavy modification to castings a la T1a conversion.)

I see the firebox components are in full swing. I am looking at making the open house. It is about 90 minutes from me.

Hopefully next year they have the whole boiler at the open house.

Here is a photo of part of the "backhead" they are making. I have never seen the "heat and beat" but hope to see it on the 7th.

You can see the markings SA516-70 on the steel. Is that the most common boiler steel?

I had the opportunity to spend a few hours at the open house yesterday. Thanks to Jason and company for doing it, the official presentation on the build effort was very complete, open and honest. It's quite an effort, and I hope I live long enough to see the beast come to life.

I really was impressed with the turn out, displays and presentation. I spoke with Jason Johnson, the T1 Trust GM after the presentation and he is extremely knowledgeable about the T1 and steam locomotives in general.

Someone from the SteamChannel youtube site was there video taping the presentation. They hope to publish it in next week. I told them I would post link here.

It was very cool to see so many different groups come together and come out and help form the backhead. There were guys there from 765, 1225, 2100, 11, 611, 2716, 576, 3 and I am sure others as well. RYPN moderator, Rick Rowlands was there beating on the plate as well. I didn't get a chance to talk with him.

The pictures don't do this boiler justice. It is huge.

Thanks to the T1 Trust for allowing us in to see how its made.

Could anybody put names to the faces in the group picture? I know some, but not all. Even with just those we do know, that’s quite a lineup of talent.
