L&N took the tenders from the 22- 1949 Berkshires and converted them into "environmental" service, hauling used diesel locomotive oil to a central reprocessing location. There were painted an awful "bile green" and were used on the L&N, later Seaboard System. Some of them went to the Birmingham steam shop. Others were disposed of, one to the FWRHS for use by the NKP 765. It was a gift from President Richard Sanborn to the FWRHS in about 1984. After arriving at Fort Wayne, the sandblaster was turned on before I could get a photo or record the old 409XX number.

It is now RPCX 767, and rides on new rotating end cap bearings with new wheels. It has Buckeye 6 wheel trucks. Birmingham confused things when they started to replace the original Buckeye trucks with Commonwealth trucks, a NS preference.

Does anyone out there have any information on the original L&N Berkshire number series or which one of the environmental cars made it to Fort Wayne?

Here is what I have for the three that NS/Southern used.
SOU WT53 / N&W 250002 L&N 1975 MILW 261 (1995)
N&W 220166 L&N 19?? ITM / NKP 587 (1989)
614-B / N&W 220106 / N&W 250001 L&N 19?? VMT (2002)
***Edit I knew that somewhere I saw the L&N Number of the Fort Wayne Tender, and I found it at Steamlocomotive.com they list it’s L&N Number as 1985.

Tender from Emma 1984, still visibly numbered as such in faded L&N paint, is at the Kentucky Railroad Museum (New Haven, KY, about 10 miles from I-65 exit 105 or via the Bluegrass Parkway from I-65 exit 91).
