I don't have any photos of the 490s in service, but is that where the injectors were located "back in the day"? Looks awfully strange. Maybe I just never noticed.

The 490's used Simplex lifting injectors on the Rio Grande.

I am thrilled as always to see a new steam locomotive returned to operation! Even more so, since this is one that I never expected to see restored.

Are the non lifting injectors throttle-able at all like some lifting sellars are?
Wonder if any NG locomotives had FWHs or exhaust steam injectors ?

Great to see the 493 back in steam! looking forwarding to seeing test run videos.

If you count 1067mm gauge (3'6") the larger Japanese engines have Elesco-type FWH's. New Zealand Ka and Kb 4-8-4's have FWH's. I had the pleasure of seeing JNR D51 2-8-2's in service in Northern Honshu and Hokkaido.

Yes, Non-lifting injectors can be throttled by partially closing the suction line water valve.

Regarding FWH, the Mexican 2-6-6-2's had them.

Interesting release. I think the K-37's were too big to run to Crested Butte; I recall that K-27's were the biggest engines that could go there.

There was an Anthracite mine on that branch, the biggest Anthracite mine West of Treverton PA.

Interesting - we saw 473 last October on the second train into Silverton. So that was the last time we would see it burning coal.

I always thought the mines at Lykens were farther west than Trevorton’s, and a bit larger too, I guess not

Would make an interesting event for a photo charter or something to dress it up as a Oahu Railway engine, since those Hawaiian 2-8-2's were basically oil burning K-28 derivatives.

There were lots of cosmetic differnces, the biggest being that the Hawaiian engines had the air compressors on the boiler side, not the smokebox front. It would be a big job to make one look the part.

K-37's were the primary power on the Crested Butte branch during the 1930's and 40's. A tremendous amount of coal was moved from the CF&I Mine to Salida/Pueblo during WW11.

It looks like DRGW 493 has its compressors on the side too. If anything really would make 493 not look the part, its the tender doghouse. The summer pilot instead of the winter pilot though would go a long way in making 493 look more like its Hawaiian siblings. Still, it wouldn't be a perfect replication; but enough to look kind of similar.
