A nice selection of steam whistles from the James Morrison catalog.

I was recently contacted by a man who purchased an Ashton 3 chime whistle at a sale a few years back. It's a beauty. He sent me some pictures of the whistles. Take a look.

Tell him the languid plate on the center chime may be installed upside down.

Good eye! Tell me again why it's important to have it right-side up.

Maybe no difference at all, except cosmetic.

But as one of my car-maintenance engineers was want to say when you questioned why some stray feature was on a car (such as an air dam under the front bumper), "It costs them money to build it that way/add that part. Do you think they did that for fun?"

The edge of a Languid plate is not necessarily 90 Degrees from the "flat sides"-- in fact, it seldom is -- so having it upside down misdirects the steam stream. this affects the tone and volume of that whistle.
This kind of "three on one" mount was used on inland steamboats (as well as the whistles being mount on pipe fittings made up to hold the whistles).
Very cool piece!

A few other companies that produced or distributed whistles.
