Read the recent thread on IRM and agree that they do a great job. I would suggest that another museum that gets a thumbs up, is the Monticello Railway Museum in Illinois. MRM hosts its Railroad Days each fall and with the same idea; one admission for the day gets you all of the following:

1. Steam power (Southern 2-8-0 401) on a mixed passenger consist.
2. Diesel powered passenger train.
3. Diesel powered freight, usually using two cabooses for riders.
4. Caboose hop between the museum grounds depot and the Shops.
5. Motor car rides.
6. Other possible rail action (this year a steam powered crane).
7. Stair Tower in action (signals control all train movements).

I've attached a couple of photos from 2017. I am not a member at MRM, but I usually try to get over there at least every other year. This coming weekend is 2019's Railroad Days Celebration. Well worth the visit and another example of a railroad museum "getting it right"!

Glad I started the trend! I’ve yet to see Monticello either but heard great things.

Is that a working switch tower in operation!?

Crescent-Zephyr:

From my understanding of it, the interlocking beds and levers are from two different plants. The tower building itself is a replication using Illinois Central blueprints. And yes, the levers, and tower men, control the railroad through the tower. Quite a hectic place when the various trains are running for Railroad Days.

That's really cool. I want to get out there just to see the #401... it's the only operational Southern steam locomotive I haven't see under steam yet.
