I certainly think they look better. What really captures the look for me are the funnel like spark arrestors on the branchline engines, as seen with this fantastic picture of Abingdon 4-8-0 396. One thing I never noticed were the stars on the front of the cylinders. Nice touch.

Out of curiosity, what happened to 475's larger tender?

In her final years on the N&W, 475 served as a ceremonial engine, "backdated" with a fake diamond stack, box headlight, and smaller tender. I would imagine the larger tender ended up behind another engine, more than likely one that didn't make it.
