Let me get this straight, they caused 30,000 worth of damage and were ordered to pay 500 in compensation? certainly doesn't sound like the punishment fit the crime.

The intent is more to reform than punish, as the culprits are minors. The judicial system there is quite aware that it does not serve society to burden offenders with financial penalties that they have no realistic possibility of paying off. Our system of justice has been corrupted and in many areas now functions as a debtor's prison system-something that is explicitly prohibited in the UK.

Yeah, since the Brits originated the concept of debtor's prison, and we have taken off with the idea here to finance government on the backs of those least able to pay.

Many an affluent Briton lived in perpetual fear of the poorhouse well after obtaining the means to avoid it. The great Scottish engineer Robert Stevenson continued to live in fear of poverty until the end of his days. That's why he steered his children away from pursuits that would not pay the bills. All of his male descendants became engineers, excepting that no good Robert Louis Stevenson. Even he lamented his choice to become a writer after observing that all of his relatives had built monuments of stone that would remain for centuries after (lighthouses). During his life, Robert Louis Stevenson was a great embarrassment for his father, who considered that he failed in his duties as a father to steer Robert away from becoming a literature.
