Manufactured by Northern Pacific in 1903 for its subsidiary SP&S OE Railway for use on the Willamette Valley Line between Portland and Eugene and its branches. Looking for any information on its construction and use over the years. Northern Pacific historical and Oregon Electric have been contacted. It spent a number of years in a park in Clatskanie, Oregon before being moved to Astoria where it has resided for approx 30 years. It has found a new home in Seaside, Oregon.

Glad to hear the old girl has found a new home. I saw it in sad condition at Astoria many times. The SP&S was chartered in 1905 so it seems unlikely they had a caboose built in 1903. The NP stamped their caboose numbers on the top of the window sashes. If you can get a window out check there. |

A few more bits: In 1909 Oregon Electric had two cabooses, #025 & 026. May 21, 1938 photo of 026 with archbar trucks on page 110 of Encyclopedia of Wester Railroad History Vol III |

May 21, 1938 photo of 026 with archbar trucks on page 110 of Encyclopedia of Wester Railroad History Vol III I believe #025 is at the Oregon Electric museum. The one pictured on their website looks very similar to #026. I think the original window sashes are long gone. The caboose sat in Clatskanie without windows or trucks for a number of years. The caboose now sits on CB&Q trucks. Thanks for the reference in the Encyclopedia, I ordered a copy. Thank you! |

Would the windows had opened originally? The windows on the cupola look like they might have slid open. Any idea as to the purpose of the small platform in front of the cupola? The steps and ladders have also been replaced since 1938.

Quote: purpose of the small platform in front of the cupola Just an extension of the roofwalk for better footing on the curved roof. Quote: The steps and ladders have also been replaced since 1938. IIRC there was an ICC requirement (late '40s/50s?) that caboose ladders have grabs that extend above the roof for crew safety. |

Getting ready for some refurbishment of my caboose! Took some pictures to document its current condition…pretty poor. Picked up a couple of marker lantern and a stove for the caboose. The original ice box and sink are intact. Will have to reconstruct the lockers on the opposite side. Conductors desk and one bunk will also have to be reconstructed. https://flic.kr/s/aHsmDWHVjj

The Pacific Northwest and lack of repair over the years have taken their toll on 'ol 026. We have decided to rebuild the caboose to look like it did in the 1938 photo. We will not be doing a period restoration. |

What color would the grab rails been in 1938?

These are too big for my blast cabinet. The steps need some straightening and welding. Will have to have two new grab rails made as they were cut off. Attachment:

Thankfully the marker lamp brackets survived all these years! Attachment:
