Discussing the bathroom habits of train and engine crews over the years could fill multiple threads. I have been told that coal pile in the tender was a handy place to dispose of other things as well. Even on diesels multiple different systems have been tried, the worst probably being the "incin-o-matic" toilets CN's first SD40's came with (in very short order crews were instructed to only use them on trailing units). But back to the original topic, I've got Bingo on the bottom horizontal line. |

Several years back I was standing next to the Shay at the RMPA along with a few others and one gentleman wondered how the motor idled as compared to an internal combustion motor. I had a difficult time trying to explain that a steam locomotive was either stopped or moving. Its form of idle was under steam and ready to move. I don't think I convinced him. Bernie |

My favorite was when I allowed a young father and his son to come up into the cab. In a very “knowledgeable” fashion he explained all of the controls to his son. I didn’t correct him, but I finally had to laugh when he pointed to the Detroit “Bull’s Eye” hydrostatic lubricator and said....”And son, just look at the size of the carburetor on this thing!” Keith |

Several decades ago (about 1989) I and a friend were at Dan Markoff's when the storage track was extended out to the curb and the locomotive was steamed up and moved (without tender) out to the end. The purpose of this was to allow the oil bunker to be removed from the tender. I kept out the way of the workers and stayed out front interacting with the people who came by. The smoke, etc. brought a number of neighbors and others. One was a sheriff deputy checking out the source of the smoke. Another was a 20-something who was into racing cars and an ex-navy man probably aware of steam and steam turbine powered ships. He pointed to the cylinder and asked if that is where the turbine was located. |

My favorites: How often to the boilers explode? (Every day at 3:00. Twice on Saturdays.) Do you burn coal or water? (Water burns much cleaner, but it's a bitch to light, so we burn coal to save on matches.) |

Back when the Royal Hudson did a promotional tour of the west coast I was in Redding(CA) interviewing the RH crew (short version of long story, my hometown newspaper was given a press kit, and the editor asked if I would like to do a story on it, as he knew I was "steam crazy"--and no, I did not work at the paper). Well he was lubing the rods, with the gun going "pop-pop" and steam oozing out of places it oozes when your sitting a while. Along comes a 20s something mother with her young, maybe 6 years old daughter in tow. "Mommy, is that the steam engine?" pointing to the RH. "No dear, its this one" pointing to the SP Bicentennial diesel coupled behind us. The crew member and I just looked at each other and rolled our eyes. |
