Hi,

Does anyone know what became of TP&W lightweight office car "Prairie Marksman," used by the TP&W in the 1960s for their business trains and excursions? According to rrpicturearchives.net, the car is ex-Pullman "San Mateo."

Well, there was a heavyweight Pullman named "San Mateo" that was sold to the TP&W in October 1949.

This car was built to Plan 2521C (10 section - observation lounge) in 1917.

Appears to have survived until at least 1982 as PV Richton:

Here' another, the date is 2006 but I am not sure if that is when the photo was taken or posted: http://rrpicturearchives.net/showPictur ... id=3492905

Edit: In a comment on a different photo of a misidentified car http://rrpicturearchives.net/showPictur ... id=3602497 Jerry LaBoda commented "Now if you can find the PRAIRIE MARKSMAN you will truly have a prize..." The photo I posted below and the one Robbie Hanson linked to, looks like the South, and Richton is in MS, so that would be a good guess where it was at the time.

Thank you, but I did not post the link. That was Robbie Hanson.

This car is indeed still extant, as posted in the Pullman thread, 7th post on page #41: http://www.rypn.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=30187&start=600

I understand that it is still sitting behind a high fence in "pretty good" condition. I think the owner will eventually scrap it. And before everybody starts beating their collective chests...I really don't think anybody would want it (including hard core TP&W fans). It's so odd and so ugly that all you could do with it is look at it from the outside.

Here are two photos of the car in TP&W Ownership:

Here are a few notes on some of the larger events that occurred on the TP&W while this car was in its service.

After WWII, violent clashes between management and labor gained national attention in one of the first attempts to eliminate firemen from diesel locomotives. Subsequent investigations and dispute resolution efforts dragged on for years as both sides recognized that the outcome could set a precedent that could be applied to other railroads. This was also a major test for the dispute resolution framework established by the Railway Labor Act of 1926. https://www.pantagraph.com/news/photos-from-our-past-railroad-strikers-killed/article_f76b3635-f466-5eed-8711-77cfe2c643cb.html

In the 1950s, the M&StL attepmted to acquire the TP&W. The PRR & AT&SF opposed this action, which led to their controlling the TP&W.
