I'm certain it was scrapped around the early 1930's at the latest. I don't have an exact date. It was bought by the Alton and Southern sometime in 1918, and was equpied with a 'separable boiler'. Definately quite an oddball for a swithing and short distance transfer road, and the only articulate they ever owned.

It's quite difficult getting exact info, as not a whole lot survived from this small road. Made my book on A&S steam quite an interesting exercise in tracking info down from various sources. I'll include my photo of No. 8 later.

Thank you Sam. I have long had an interest in the mallets built for logging. A&S #8 was one of the few that left the woods for other service. I am probibly one of the few people left alive that has run two mallets.

Not to spoil your accomplishments John, but I also have ran a pair. The first was in 1972 on the CWR when I was offered to run 2-6-6-2 46 from Northspur over the hill to about 2 miles out of Willits. The engineer was afraid of a log truck clobbering us at the hwy crossing. Despite all the negative talk about lack of adhesion after the tanks were removed, I had a great time with her (on a hot dry day) with a 7 car train. A real stud.

Also briefly ran Clover Valley Lbr. Co. 2-6-6-2T 4 at Castro Point once before they moved.

Here is the photo of No. 8 from my collection. I believe the photographer was Charles E. Winters of Kansas City, Mo. It is the only photo I know of showing this engine on the A&S.

Built by Baldwin in December of 1910 (Construction No. 35785) for the Portland and Southwestern. Bought in 1918 by the Alton and Southern. The locomotive weighed in at 116 tons on 51 inch drivers with a 42 foot wheelbase. Cylinders measured 18.5''x28'' (High pressure) and 28''x28'' (Low pressure). Equipped with a separable boiler, which is the reason the flues measured in at only 13 feet.

You can see the innerds of that odd boiler here:

I hope there are more than two of us left who have ran two mallets. I had the pleasure of running US Plywood #11 and Weyerhaeuser #6 many times at Snoqualmie, WA.

So the interior of the boiler was laid out much the same as on the Santa Fe 'hinged boiler' Mallets, except the 'boiler' didn't hinge in the middle.
