UP 4014 being hydro-tested

3rd hand word from the UP Steam Club facebook page is that it's having its boiler filled today for the hydro test. I just signed up for the group but haven't been approved yet so I can't confirm.

Can confirm that UP offically posted a video yesterday to the steam club that talked about the filling with warm water for the hydro. Unfortunately there were no details on when the actual test would be, and that at the time it was just to get the boiler up to temp for the test.

As someone not familiar with a hydro test process: would you do a "dry run" first without the FRA guy there to find problems ahead of time just to keep from wasting his time, or is it too much trouble?

That is the best approach. The FRA is there to witness the hydro and inspection by the owner/operator. Best to resolve as many issues as possible ahead of time.

I can attest to that. When the Saginaw Timber No.2's boiler was ready for its first hydro, it was done without the FRA in attendance. And a second hydro was also done sans FRA. Leaks were found in both preliminary tests, so we knew what we had to do to pass. When the third hydro was done, the FRA inspector did attend and the boiler passed with flying colors at 125% of MAWP. It is always best to make sure that the FRA understands that you are serious about what you are doing, serious about doing it right and serious about not wasting the FRA inspector's limited time.

IIRC, the FRA only needs to be notified when the hydro is being done. They do not necessarily need to attend for the test to be official. That's up to the FRA's discretion.

I think that the FRA wants to be there to ensure that the conditions of the hydro are met AND there are no leaks. That is, boiler temp between 70 and 120 degrees F. and test conducted at 125% of MAWP per Part 230.36. For the 4014 with a MAWP of 300 PSI, that would be 375 PSI.
