From another thread:

Some baggage cars were outfitted with collapsible stables to transport horses, presumably along with their owners. I know IRM has one from the CNW.
The last two horse cars that the Santa Fe had are preserved in Southern California. Orange Empire has ATSF 1999. Southern California Chapter of R&LHS has ATSF 1992 at its display at the Los Angeles County fairgrounds in Pomona. Both of these were part of a group (1990-1999) built in 1930.

I was wondering what other horse cars made it to preservation?

So the roll call is at four currently now. The two Santa Fe, the Chicago and North Western and the New York Central car I asked about in the other thread.

The one I mentioned in my original comment would be number 8784. Here's a link to the photo gallery: http://www5.irm.org/gallery/CNW8784 . I haven't ever been inside the car, so I would have no idea if it still has the partitions for horses.

There used to be several UP horse cars on the ground just outside of Marysville, KS. They’re no longer there so I presume they were scrapped.

There is an ex-B&O that was part of the Buckeye Scenic group. It's in rough shape but still extant. Another ex B&O was in Frankfort, MI at the Smoke Stack Storage up until 2006 then I lost track of it. Current landowner said it was trucked out of town. Both of apparently the same class of car.

There is an ex-C&O car being used as a train layout, with a fundraiser underway for some repairs.

There is an ex UP car at North Alabama on a museum backlot, photos here:

You are correct. It was a horse car, then converted for auto transport. She was in BAD shape. The last nail in the coffin was the fact that somebody had stolen all the bearings. Nobody noticed them missing and the car was moved. Tore the axles and the journal boxes up bad. The only good thing was that about half the wheels were able to get re-used on new axles for one of the other passenger cars. There were some parts that were saved. I know that an entire coupler and draft gear was saved. There was only one on the car when it arrived.

Likewise. I've found less than nothing so far. Any luck on your end?

Brian, I strongly suspect they are not what you are looking for, but the French "40 and 8" cars preserved in various states were intended at least in part as horse cars. Understandably, they are more akin to stock cars than express/horse cars.

Incidentally, Klink Garrett's Ten Turtles to Tucumcari is a delightful account of the Railway Express Company, with references to shipping horses, etc.

The "40 and 8" cars were just standard French boxcars of the time. The French military rated them as being suitable for carrying eight horses or forty men, That doesn't mean they were considered passenger cars either.

It seems in Europe that have a long history of moving people in freight cars.

I received an email from a correspondent who reads this and other railroad related sites -- but does not post.

To add to the list of horse cars on the Railway Preservation list, you can add SP #4300 at the Arizona Ry. Museum here in Chandler AZ.
Doing some additional research indicates that this car was built by St Louis Car in 1937 (last heavyweight car order for the SP) as #7241 (20 cars 7229-7248). Changed to mail storage car #4700 as of 1/31/1951. Then to SPMW 5974; to the museum in 1995-96.

ATSF 1997 is at the Pacific Southwest Railway Museum in Campo, CA (San Diego area). It is in fair condition. See https://www.psrm.org/trains/passenger/atsf-1997/

Nope, you actually seem to know more than I do.

There is another ATSF horse car, privately owned, in Cedar Park, Texas.

CPR had a series of 1940 era cars that were used by the RCMP in moving their horses around Canada for their public exhibitions. One of those landed in the USA, was remodeled, and operated as the PONY EXPRESS. It was even approved by Amtrak, mostly on the west coast. I don't know that it has operated in 2 or 3 years and was stored in California last that I heard of.
