To bad one of these multi millionares like the one that keeps trying to build a functional replica of Titanic doesn't "fall in love" with her and just have her rebuilt and made operational. She is bigger than Titanic and would probably cost less or the same as building a ground up replica of the ill fated steamer from 1912. Or build a purpose built graving dock to cosmetic restore for display like the did with the White Star tender steamship that once served Titanic. The interior could be redone in stages. But I fear this old girls time is getting shorter and shorter unless one of these super rich ship lovers comes along to her ultimate rescue, everything else is just a band aid IMHO.

Went to the IKEA across the street and couldn’t believe how terrible she looks. SS United States is barely visible under all of the rust. What shape is her hull in? Too bad her interior was gutted a while back.

The amount of money this project has pissed away over the last decade? is insane. One just has to look into the 990 to see. Lots of money spent on everything else, but little on the ship.

Its time to either reef it, or scrap it. Save some fancy things. Its too far gone, and too damn big. Several major players have looked into it already, and everyone has passed. They have gotten several LARGE donations to keep it hanging on, the money goes away, and the cycle repeats.

The money spent on this chunk of scrap could have FUNDED many, many smaller maritime projects and then some.

Its a great ship, but the reality is there, and the writing has been on the wall. I am baffled its still floating.

When NCL did their feasibility study a decade ago, they found her hull integrity is still something like 95% of what it was when built. As a military transport disguised as a passenger vessel, she's still pretty sturdy.
