What is the story behind this D&H RPO power car? https://ozarkmountainrailcar.com/assets/images/1131/2017-12-09-20-51-42-IMG_2244.jpg

Listing says it is ex-SP; there is a picture of some stenciled build date there which I think indicates conversion in 1983. It is said to have nothing more than a 240V 3ph generator in it, and the fact that it still has plain bearings (they are called something different and less 'correct' in the description but we don't need to go there!) speaks worlds about its likely history. I would suspect it is either 'hotel power' for a typical two-branch 120V electrification of work-train equipment (using OTS house-wiring components and appliances) or something used for light welding.

Presumably something about the internal walls or "amenities" of an RPO compartment facilitated the installation of diesel genset and appropriate size fuel tank.

Thanks for the info. Not a true D&H car then.

I'm about 99% certain that's a D&H car. Originally a bagg-RPO, with the RPO section windows blanked out. The roof line, the trucks, the large vents all shout "The D&H".

HP is right. I believe it is #703.

Couldn't find a photo of 703 but there are several of 708, sure looks similar:

708 at C&CV is sitting on LIRR "Ping-Pong" coach trucks (the passenger car equivalent of Fox Pressed Steel trucks).

So Howard, what happened to the original trucks? Must be a story there.

The D&H RPO that started this thread appears to be the same one that was left on the Belfast and Moosehead Lake. See here

The 708 was acquired by CACV/Delaware Otsego for use as storage etc. Removed from it's original trucks it was "grounded" behind the Milford, NY enginehouse for years.

The Leatherstocking Chapter, NRHS, operators of the new C&CV put it back on trucks for use as a passenger facility that has since been superseded. I believe the trucks came with the D&H big hook.

The Chapter has another D&H RPO still on it's original trucks that was acquired from a local scrap dealer. Would like seeing that car back in service someday but needs a lot of work- especially the floor.
