I am working on doing some light restoration on a wood CV caboose 4015 and have some questions. I know intiorer drawings exist but the ones we have on display are too small to read the measurements does snyone have bigger drawings? I also want to know what kind of air valve went by the conductors desk. And the distsnce between the bottom of the corner lantern brackets and thr bottom of the caboose body so I can place thrm at the right hight. I also have more questions but I will start with these. Here is a 360° view inside our caboose.

Is this a standard wood CNR design caboose? If so, PM me.

Richard, it is not a CN standard design, but a variation on the theme, and some things are different.

RCD,

Have Sam send me a request and I can copy some of the prints I have. the pipe to the conductors desk was for a pressure gauge, and also had a quarter turn drain to clear condensation from the pipe. if necessary I can measure my former car for marker lamp bracket locations.

What is really needed is a good side view of this car in operation, so I can get the remaining stencils information made, like build date, weight, etc. so far have not been able to turn on up outside of a poor photo in a book that is heavily pixelated.

RCD, It looks like there was a private owner between you and the Green Mountain.

The passenger seats are not correct, there would be a continuous bench with storage below down both walls, that doubled as beds when the crew over-nighted.

The missing latches on the closets near the entry door would be sliding bar latches. Those cabinet hinges look to be modern ones trimmed to fit the locations.

The bathroom has been upgraded by a private owner, the original toilet if that series had one, would have been a tin or porcelain cone and a hole through the floor. There were no holding tanks in that era, you fertilized the RoW, thus the reason for the signs that you would see in coaches bathrooms `Please do not use Toilet while Car is Standing at the Station'... Some cabooses didn't have toilets so either you hung off the side or end of the caboose or waited for the next switching move and found a bush.

Attached is what your lantern brackets should look like, these are the ones on the CV 4052 at the Ct Eastern RR Museum, one we used was from the 4029 and one I made new for the restoration, the other 2 were originals from the 4052. You can get the lantern bracket casting (you had it in your hand) from WT Kirkman or Adlake (G Socket Marker Lamp Bracket). https://www.lanternnet.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=WKL&Product_Code=P232390&Category_Code=

The caboose was used as a pool cabin from the 1970 untill 2000. We have the brackets and the "bracket brackets" be we don't know how far up to mount them. One of the brackets was broken and i was going to use epoxy to fix it but buying one from your link seems better. Most of the museumes resorces right now are focaused on getting $40,000 rased for a car bsrn extention so the caboose is low on the priorty list and I may have to spend some of my own money for certin things here are some good 360° photos of a very compleat CV caboose https://www.google.com/maps/uv?pb=!1s0x ... Rich,

Can you send the gentleman a couple photos of the tail pipes on your caboose, and maybe dimensions of the whistles? he seems to be missing the whistles, and perhaps more; doesn't seem to be enough left to reproduce without info from another source.

Back in August of 2016, the National Park Service scrapped five wooden cars at Steamtown National Historic site in Scranton, PA. One of the artifacts that was scrapped was a CV caboose. Here is the thread:

http://www.rypn.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=39726&sid=d322f14c21362fa38aec01392e7eb51a

The consensus among several posters appears to be that the Park Service fully documented these cars prior to scrapping. If so, the Site Historian, Pat McKnight Pat_McKnight@nps.gov 570-340-5193, should have some information that would be helpful in the restoration of a CV caboose.

It also appears that some of the hardware from these scrapped wooden cars was salvaged by the Park Service for future use. They may have some parts that you need in storage so it may be helpful to contact preservation specialist Bruce Mowbray Bruce_Mowbray@nps.gov 570-340-5248.

Best of luck to you. Hope your efforts yield some much needed parts and information for your CV caboose. If you reach out to either Mr. McKnight or Mr. Mowbray, please consider sharing your experience with the Park Service as a guide to others who may have an interest in similar items/information. Thank you.

Folks,
I believe Mr. McKnight has retired from the Steamtown NHS or transferred to another park. He sure was knowledgeable about trains!

A few corrections to my previous post, was assuming some of the features that were common between our other 2 wooden cabeese (Rutland 40 & CV 4052) and the CV 4029.

The bottom of lantern bracket is 103" above the rail head. There is no grab iron in the roof overhang like you were postulating in the video.

The closets inside the door under the short roof, the 2 on the left (I think currently is the toilet) were clothes closets with hanger rods and the pair on the right were for tools, lanterns and coupler parts and the tank for the Kerosene stove was in the first one.

Closeup of the Closet latches, thought they would be drawbars like our other 2 cabeese.

In the Cupola area, on the right side, on the door under the forward brakeman's seat is where the Fusee rack goes. (second upper cabinet on the right before you enter the large room).

The rod in the long room side of the cupola was to hang a blackout curtain so that the conductor could have the lantern burning while doing his paperwork, without impairing the night vision of the brakemen on watch in the cupola, while the train was traveling after dark.

Continuing into the large room area, immediately on the right was the sink which drained through the floor and had a tap connected to the water tank behind the heater.

On the left is where the conductor's desk was located along with the gauge, there is only a condensation drain valve on the tee before the gauge. There are grab irons at both ends of the desk top, you can see the one on the left.

Real surprise was the seating area, the storage benches that are on the other 2 cabeese is not on the CV 4029. There were pivot out beds, we are missing the one on the right (where the drop table is, and that is the correct leg for the drop table in these cabeese). Because of other items in the caboose I was only able to photograph the last 2 feet of the bed, but you can see the folding leg, the mounting arm and the remains of a canvas cover that is mounted under the chair rail.

And the last photo for tonight is the latch that holds the table up when not in use and the stretcher brackets.

Ceilings are covered with Masonite and 1.0" x 1/4" thick painted rectangular trim, Oak maybe??. Only the wall in the large room are also covered the same as the ceilings. The walls of the cupola and the short roof area is all vertical tongue and groove pine boards.

Take care,
Rich C.
