Hello all, I am currently looking for available reference manuals or other resources for Shays and other such geared locomotives. I have a small collection of the ICS manuals, but I do not believe I have seen any books in that series that pertain to geared locomotives. Books similar to the ICS series would be what I have in mind with my inquiry. Thanks in advance. |

Step 1: Buy a rod locomotive... There are some excellent reference books out there about Shays, Heislers, Climaxes and Willamette but they're historical, not technical. Sadly, I don't recall ever seeing anything like the ICS manuals for geared locos. Obviously, some of it will carry over, things like pistons and valves, but there is much that will not. |

I'm a fireman on a normal rod engine, but after a return trip to Cass this past weekend I wanted to see what I could do to learn more about what was in front of me :-) I visited Durbin as well of course, and would be curious to learn more about the operations of a Heisler as well. |
