CP 5903 donated to Exporail / Canadian Ry. Museum

Good evening,

Exporail / The Canadian Ry. Museum received today, CP 5903, an SD40-2 built by GMD in Dec. 1978 in donation from Canadian Pacific Ry.

One of 515 similar units built new for CP between 1972 and 1985 (excluding the SD40-2F) making them the largest buyer of this model in Canada. From an historical point-of-view, this locomotive represents close to 40 years of mainline freight diesel power system-wide and a successful approach to standardisation form the point of view of CP Rail, being used in a wide range of assignments.

The museum is extremely greatfull for this significant and generous donation from Canadian Pacific Railway.

Looks remarkably like it did in service 30 or so years ago, wonder where it was stashed. By the looks of that airline the brakes didn't want to cooperate for the move.

An SD40-2 is about as typical a CP Rail locomotive as any I can think of.

And Exporail has an earlier 5900: CPR 5935 - a T-1c Selkirk 2-10-4.

I wonder if SD40-2 5903 had worked between Calgary and Revelstoke.

Did she get an electronic bell just before being laid up when the new regime seized control?

Hopefully her bell mount between the number boards won't be empty for long. :)

5903 was never converted to the electric bell. Still an air activated example. It will eventually be installed again.

It was used system wide, so very likely that it would have been used in the Rockies. I've seen pictures of if on the former D&H and on the NS in Georgia!

Congrats to Exporail for continuing to build a meaningful collection beyond steam. A #5900 is the perfect choice. Glad to see CPR is still a friend to preservation. She may not be the sexiest display (though to some she will be) but she’s the right display. Good going. - Rob

No it is not scheduled to be for the present.
