First the bad news:
I bought a 1979 edition of the The NALCO Water Handbook. It is a classic textbook, but unfortunately not also a NALCO catalog or advertising circular. The handbook's chapter on cooling water treatment, and the index, have no references to S.P.D., synthetic polyacrylate dispersants, Nalco 0525 S.P.D., or Nalco 39-RR.

Now the good news:
An expert at Nalco is trying hard to find information on Nalco 0525 S.P.D. He said that it was made in the 1960s or 1970s, so it is at least 48 years old.

He also is getting info on Nalco 39-RR.

Does anyone own, or have access to (e.g. via Access Engineering) a 4th Edition of the NALCO Handbook?

This has a section under 'Internal Chemical Treatment Protocols' (for low-pressure, which they define as <1000psi) for 'Phosphate-Polymer Programs'. Some portion of this may involve antifoam, as in Porta Treatment, but it would be interesting to see what this section calls for chemically.

Just looked through a couple industrial and scientific papers on synthetic polyacrylate dispersants, most likely you need to talk to an old head in the Boiler Water Treatment department at EcoLabs. Most of the references (within water treatment) were for prevention of scale in boilers, didn't see anything for low temperature stuff like an internal combustion engine coolant. Of course hazard level would depend on the chemicals used.

Not sure what to look for in the yellow pages, but there are material testing labs that have Chromatography equipment that can analyze a small sample to tell you the compounds and concentrations (they sell the service for industrial validation). From that info you would be able to figure the actual hazard level and disposal method. Some police crime labs (usually large city and state level) also have them, maybe they could run it?

Good luck,
Rich C.

Based on my experience as an analytical chemist, polymeric materials don't chromatograph very well. Then again, I've been retired for 22 years, so perhaps things have changed (as has everything else!)
