In 1960, during the debates on railroad working rules, the labor unions requested that some of their members photograph their workplaces, in an attempt to make the case that a second set of eyes was still valuable in a diesel cab. These photographs are now available, a look at railroading on a day when steam was gone, but the smell of coal smoke was still in the air.
