Another wildfire is burning in Colorado, this one in the area where Iowa Pacific's San Luis & Rio Grande climbs over La Veta pass:
Quote:
The Spring Fire has exploded in size to more than 14,000 acres according to the Colorado Division of Fire and Prevention Control.

It has burned an estimated 14,424 acres, it is still 0 percent contained.

No injuries or deaths have been reported at this time.

With the fire's growth, the pre-evacuation zone has expanded into Huerfano County. Late Thursday night. The entire towns of La Veta and Cuchara are on pre-evacuation notices as are the Paradise Acres, Navajo Ranch subdivisions and parts of the Majors Ranch and Pinon Hills areas.

This is in addition to pre-evacuation notices sent out earlier Thursday night on the west side of the fire, closer to the community of Fort Garland.

This firemap shows the fire squarely over the SLRG's western flank of La Veta Pass, clear up to the summit where they have their concert series.

This is called the Spring Fire, and is now at 38,136 acres, as of 9:57 am PDT, according to Iniciweb, with no containment shown. "Contained" means a fire has been OUT for at least 24 hours in the area declared to be "contained".

(To give an idea of the size of this fire, it is the same size now sa a square 7.7 miles on a side!)

Two excerpts of an article posted on the Alamosa newspaper's website:
Quote:
ALAMOSA– With the railroad bridge at Sierra seriously damaged and the stage at its concert venue at Fir destroyed, the San Luis and Rio Grande Railroad is temporarily out of business.

Matt Abbey, special events director for the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad, said the 50-foot bridge near Forbes Park was ravaged by the Spring Fire and nearly collapsed under the weight of empty hopper cars sitting on it. The concert site was primarily saved from the fire for now except for the heart of the venue, the box car replica stage.

The railroad was able to deliver five tank cars of water, over 100,000 gallons, to the Forbes crossing just off Highway 160, which is west of Sierra and the main fire path, to aid in the fire fight and plan to take more if needed.

Ellis said he notified the fire incident commander that they would bring more loaded cars if needed. He also thanked the City of Alamosa for providing the water.
