If any of you have been to the Stewartstown Railroad over the decades, you may remember that its station is literally a time capsule of short-line railroading, little altered from the days of "Mixed Train Daily" and reminiscent of the depot at the East Broad Top in Orbisonia in that nature. I've run a photo of that "time capsule" in two books.

Unfortunately, time and this spring's monstrously bad weather have not been kind to this building. After years of deferred maintenance (and no train operations), it's at a crisis stage.

The Friends of the Stewartstown RR seek $5,000 to rip down the old slate roof and re-roof with metal. Long-term, they would like to re-do the roof with slate, but the estimates for that ran $35-100,000, and they see no hope of being able to raise that much money.

I'd sure like to prove them wrong........

I've been informed that they are pursuing multiple tracks of support, including an interest-free loan by a supporter to cover the emergency repair ASAP, grants from local and state agencies and philanthropists to cover a historically accurate re-roofing, etc.

Your support is appreciated, however small or logistical.

A metal roof will last a long time and take a tremendous amount of weight off of the building!

Somebody scrapping all the copper flashing probably did not help either - I wonder when that occurred? If now the framing has rotten, then replacing the structure is critical, and the old slate material probably cannot be salvaged. Too bad, a slate roof can last several lifetimes with maintenance.

We've raised nearly half of the target amount.
