It seems through the months of April and May CSX has been wiping out vacant depots along its right of way. Here's a partial list...

Nelson, Va - can't confirm of this has been torn down yet

Abbeville, S.C.

Balcony Falls - supposedly torn down last week but can't get confirmation

Have there been others? I am trying to compile a list for a story I'm working on. Any leads to credible news sources are appreciated. Thank you.

Balcony Falls was indeed torn down.

Gladstone is still standing but its not looking good.

CSX also recently tore down former C&O A Cabin in Alleghany VA.

I could kick myself for never recording that scene. I figured it was safe because the building was being used by the railroad. Thanks for leads on the others.

Any building owned by a railroad can be torn down with little or no notice. I had to learn that lesson the hard way with one of my favorite depots in Illinois.

The Clinchfield depot in Dante, VA was/is in danger of demolition by CSX and last I heard the town was pushing for its preservation. I'm not sure what became of it but I believe it's still standing.

So far as I've heard, the Dante depot is still standing but not by much. The roof caved in a few years ago now, and it was pretty trashed on the inside before that.

They are eliminating insurance and liability costs. They might try to sell them off. Cheaper than razing them.

Later!
