Post subject:  Replacing upper and lower seals on a 567-B power assembly

Some of you may recall that I posted a message last week regarding a leaking 567-b engine. I was wondering if anyone had tips or tricks on how to replace the upper and lower seals on the power assemblies? I've been told to get oversized Durox seals. The long term goal is to convert to a 567-C. But for now. I have to work with what I have. Thanks!

Make sure the liner bores are not pitted. If they are, use Belzona to true them up. Make sure the liner O rings dont roll during installation. Rub some Dawn on them when putting the liner in to help them drop in.

If you have never done a pack, find somebody that has to do it with you. Its not hard, but its tedious the first times. Make sure you have all the correct tools before starting to tear it down.

Agree with using Durox rings, Agree with using Belzona to fill pitted or eroded areas. Remember 50% of the sealing area is on the power assembly itself so it needs to be just as clean as the bore, wire brush all ring grooves and seating surfaces.

For ring lube we use Dow O ring grease as called for by EMD MI's but for blocks with marginal seating surfaces hi temp silicone RTV makes for excellent ring lube and also fills voids. Just let the RTV set before adding water.

Does anyone have the EMD part #s for the seals we'll need to take care of a complete power assembly?

Top head Seal
Lower Head Seal

Any help is appreciated! Thank you.

You may want to start with picking up a set of 567B manuals and parts books to have on hand if you dont already. I THINK Hatch & Kirk sells them.

eBay is another good place to look for 567B maintenance manuals and service literature. The price of railroad paper collectibles has declined significantly and many auctions for paper items are now ending with only one bid. It has gotten to the point where it can be cheaper to buy original manuals on eBay than to have a copy made.

Is there a particular reason that you need to pull the head? It is far easier to pull the whole pack, clean up the grooves, and reseal. I would say it would cut your work in half by not unbolting the head.

We started on our project. Attached are a photo of the first power assembly cleaned up and an inside shot of where it came from.
