The Mid-Continent Railway Museum is very pleased to announce that we have received a $9,000 grant from the John H. Emery Rail Heritage Trust (ERHT). These funds will be used to kick off the interior restoration work in the Duluth South Shore & Atlantic sleeping car “DULUTH”. We sincerely thank the John H. Emery Rail Heritage Trust for their most generous grant.

Mid-Continent is seeking donations to match the ERHT grant so the restoration process can move ahead at a faster pace and additional restoration tasks can be performed.

Congrats Bill to you and the dept for the ongoing success, not only for this grant but all the other progress made. Very happy for the Duluth getting another helping hand. A most incredible project. Much like the NP coach coming off the island out in WA state. Time capsule material. Regards, John.

Bill, I looked at your web site and it was not clear as to the current condition of the exterior. Has the car been put back together on the exterior, brakes, steps, truss rods, roof, paint, etc? Second question is did the home owner save any of the interior parts they removed like birth hardware? Or will it all have to be made from scratch? Thanks, David Johnston.

David I know you addressed your questions to Bill, but I might shed some light on this until Bill comes back. The exterior of the car has had work done on it but not that much looks different at this time. Think four new steps were built but only two installed for ease of entry. The truss rods were already on the car originally. MC restoration shop acquired brake cyl and reservoir of the right size along with brake rigging from another organization last fall. The cyl and air reservoir are being cleaned up and painted, hydro and restored before being installed. The exterior has no doubt been addressed only to stabilize until it goes indoors later this year. The missing draft gear was installed last year so moving it is much easier and safe. To my knowledge this is most of the exterior work so far.

Bill will have to answer questions regarding original saved pcs. There were some that were given to the car but don't know exactly what those parts were? There was also a Soo Line sleeper that was a donor car for trucks and many other parts. Both cars from very similar order and yr of mfg. I know the car shop guys saved anything they could use, including some berth hardware . But will let Bill go into details on this.

MC has new car barn built awaiting track and more base laid down. This will not take long after the work resumes. Much shuffling around is planned but the Duluth should be under a roof later this summer? Winter not letting go till about 2 weeks ago and flooding is postponing a lot of things in Wi this spring, at least in my neck of the woods. This new building is going to really help restoration efforts by getting this equipment under cover. Much gratitude to the donors involved with both the Duluth and the car barn. Hope this helps.

Regards, John.

John, thank you for the information. Good to here about the new building. Nothing does more for preserved railway equipment than keeping it inside.

To expand on John's response. The long time owners (80 years) of the DULUTH did retain and store quite a few items that they removed from the car over the years. While none of the berths (uppers or lowers) were saved they did save many other items. We're very thankful for the owners taking such good care of the car and for retaining parts that were removed from the car. It is really amazing that many items were saved and we're extremely fortunate to get these items back so they can be re-united with the car.

The berths will have to be reconstructed based on the original ones in the car. Berths from other Barney & Smith built sleeping cars unfortunately can't be used in the DULUTH as the berth contour, berth length and the marquetry is unique to the series of (5) DSS&A sleeping cars built in 1902. We do however have all of the necessary berth hardware (hinges, locks, retractors, etc.) for the missing berths in the car thanks the parts that we saved during dismantling the Soo Line #1257 tourist sleeper.

I hope this helps.
