Apparently, this EMD SW locomotive (SW8/SW9 whatever) in Eagle Mountain still exists amidst the scrapping of the former Kaiser railroad line between there and Ferrum in the past year. A nearby city recently found it as a candidate to display on a piece of railroad track, but the transportation price is too extraordinary for them. http://cvmrr.com/Picture%20013bsmall.jpg

If I tracked the right locomotive, internet information says it's an ex CNW SW8 numbered 801, the only one of its model purchased new by the railroad, and it had been assigned to the Chicago Navy Pier line. http://www.chicagoswitching.com/forum/index.php?topic=24.0 Retired from CNW on 1975, was rebuilt in Silvis, IL and sold to Kaiser Steel as their 1029 assigned in Fontana steel mill. Also look at http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=2858729 (CNW) and http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=2395574 (KSCX).

In Don's Rail Photos site, it says the locomotive was owned by California Steel Industries on 1984. However, their photo for this engine is the same one used for their 1027. Pictures from another forum and eBay also show the locomotive in gray and red Kaiser Steel paint in 1984 and/or 1986. I also found a picture of 1029 in a grimy yellow and white coat dated 1985; its front porch steps damaged as also seen in a fresh Kaiser Steel coat picture.

Again, if this is the right locomotive, it received its current paint coat under Kaiser Ventures Inc. (and a fixed porch and new handrails) and reportedly was transported by road to Eagle Mountain (1990s?) to run work trains on the line. Another locomotive was reported to be trucked there, but it was presumably trucked back to Fontana or never went to Eagle Mountain. A Flickr comment claimed the last train (which dumped rocks) happened on October 15, 2000. The floods in 2003 devastated a portion of the line.

In 2011, this locomotive appeared in a stunt in the US Top Gear show (Episode "America's Strongest Pickup") where a Ford truck pulled it and a coupled side dump car.

A councilman (and previous mayor) of the city of Blythe learned about the locomotive and city council made preference for this candidate to be displayed in that city. Unfortunately, they found that with a Coachella-based company, $157,929 was quoted for relocating the engine with cranes and truck (no additional expense for acquisition needed, just transport), so no alternative plans will be proposed unless city council wishes so. I was watching the city meeting on April 24 and this councilman made mention of RailAmerica as the company who informed the councilman about the locomotive, although that company folded to Genesee & Wyoming about five years ago. (In this thread I formerly stated that they owned the locomotive but the minutes doesn't make this clear who the owner is) I heard he said that other parties are interested with this locomotive, including an unknown museum. https://www.cityofblythe.ca.gov/AgendaCenter/ViewFile/Minutes/_04242018-63 (Page 5)

The quotation attached to the April 24 Meeting Agenda shows that it's located in Eagle Mountain. https://www.cityofblythe.ca.gov/AgendaCenter/ViewFile/Agenda/_04242018-63 (Pages 109-110 in lower right corner)

The city's attempt is now a news story of its own.
