This question is for anybody who has done a prime mover transplant, or who is very intimate with EMD engines. I know that there are probably many little things that are different in these engines such as fuel and oil line differences, or other plumbing diffences. Is there any big differences in the engines that make transplant difficult. Will A block blowers fit on a C block?

Yes, the Roots blowers from a 567A engine can be used on a 567C engine.

Beyond that, the interchangeability of parts and/or complete engines was the subject of a two hour seminar at an ARM (ATRRM, HRA) conference about 10 years ago. I don't recall hearing of anything on the topic being done at any more recent preservation conferences. It is still an important and relevant topic for any preservation organizations that operate older EMD locomotives.

The best quick reference for interchangeability of individual parts or components is the EMD UTEX (Unit Exchange) ordering reference booklets which can sometimes be found on eBay. They have listings that show the applicability of each component (by category and specific part number) to the various models of EMD engines. The booklet is typically about 40 pages long, and was published at about 5 year intervals. The 1970 printing would be about ideal to show interchangeability of parts between the various 567 models and the 645 series.

Unfortunately the RYPN article section is still not fully functional, the UTEX guide would be a good topic for a short article.
