I have a retired ATSF steam locomotive engineer that is my friend and he is well into his 80's. Before I forget I would love to buy a pair of the correct gloves such as he would have used back in the 50's as a Santa Fe locomotive engineer and have him autograph them so I preserve a little something of his fascinating life. I remember seeing back in 1992 when the 3751 made its' cross-country trip a lot of retired engineers taking the throttle for a nostalgic moment and I noticed signed gloves being exchanged. What is an appropriate brand, style, etc, and are they still available? Time is slipping away.....

thanks,

Dan

I have photo evidence these were used in Michigan in the late 1960’s; they have the right “name” but a UP loco. They turn up from time to time on eBay.

The Fairfield gloves aren't too bad, but they've really cheapened them in recent years. They used to be stitched around the cuff edges (like where the hand meets the cuff), but that isn't done any more. And they're made in Jamaica. They're pretty thin, which makes them comfortable, but they probably won't stand up to much daily wear.

Again, you won't find a better railroad glove on planet earth than the red star at this link. They breathe, they flex, the large fits medium to large hands and they make a special fit for women. They wear a hundred times better than leather tig welding gloves. Steel workers wear them for quick grabs on hot plates. They have an extra protector band for the knuckles. They are thick cotton, but are flexible and with medium or big hands your fingers go all the way to the end of the glove. The big red star looks like something out of the 19th century. If you order a large lot and pay a one time set up fee you can have your railroad's name printed around the star. The gauntlet cuff has saved my skin hundreds of times. These gloves are a natural for steam locomotive work.

No, I don't own the company.

I ordered two pairs to check them out, and yes, they are awesome. Personally, I wish the red star were a little larger, but that's my only complaint. I prefer a thick cotton glove, and these will be my go-to gloves from now on.

I wonder if they'd do a custom logo? Aside from the imprint, they look an awful lot like the Super Chief ones. How cool would it be to create a repro of that design?
