On April 11, 2018, our friends and neighbors at Verdant View Farm suffered the destruction of their 95-year-old dairy barn in a catastrophic fire. Situated on either side of Strasburg Rail Road’s Right of Way, Verdant View is a 4th-generation, family owned and operated farm and bed & breakfast committed to sustainable agriculture and impactful relationships.

As a way to support the Ranck family and Verdant View Farm, Strasburg Rail Road and Lerro Productions will operate a Mixed Freight photo charter on Saturday, May 26, 2018. All proceeds will go directly to help the Verdant View Farm.

Exact details and consist are tentative, but under the professional direction of Lerro Productions, participants will enjoy a steam-powered mixed train photo charter beginning late afternoon and extending into the evening of May 26th. In conjunction with the Memorial Day holiday, this particular charter will take on a Military Railroad Service theme, with uniformed re-enactors, encampments, and more.

Tickets are required to participate, and they may be purchased through Strasburg Rail Road’s ticketing platform for $200.00 each.

Strasburg Rail Road and Lerro Productions are donating the labor and equipment for this unique photo charter opportunity so that all proceeds may be used to support Verdant View Farm.

This is absolutely wonderful! The remains of the barn were still smoldering over the weekend and it was impossible to not see the devastation from the train.

Thanks Strasburg Railroad!

I can't make the trip but is there a way to donate to the effort? Kudos to you and everyone for helping out a neighbor.

This is what good neighbors do. A huge part of the Strasburg is the fact it lays in such beautiful, undisturbed farm country. How wise and decent of you to recognize a significant portion of the railroad's charm coming from your line side friends.
Well done.

A site for donations has been set up here:

That donation link was found in this story about the fire:

Many thanks for the links! That's quite an outpouring of support in such a short time.

As a previous (and regular!) customer of both Strasburg and Lerro this is just such a wonderful thing to do. I have photographed that barn (both with the train, and from the train) many times.

Hoping to make it for the event but really should buy a ticket either way since this is such a great cause.

Sounds like there will be an old fashioned barn raising soon.

Later!

An old-fashioned barn raising occurred when the Helmstetter's barn burnt down in the famous curve of the old WM near Cumberland.

The latest update says a locomotive will be lettered as U.S. Army and shows a vintage photo of an 0-6-0 tank U.S. army engine. There's only 1 locomotive at Strasburg that fits that bill!
