Post subject:  EMD 567B spin on fuel filter upgrade

I am hoping to find some information here, as I haven't been able to anywhere else. I have also searched the forum to see if it had been discussed before.

I am currently leasing an SW with a 567B engine. It has the old canister style fuel filters. I have not had a chance to change them to see if they are still available, but regardless I would like to upgrade to spin on filters for ease of maintenance and to help the owner out (good friend of mine). I have seen other 567B's with spin ons, I just currently don't have access to go look and see how they modified it. I would think the mounting plate either needed to be changed, or there were adapter discs that were bolted on and then the filter mounted on that.

Anyone have any suggestions or pictures of their setups?

The conversion requires qty. (2) 8423132 spin-on filters, qty. (1) 8423131 adapter plate, and qty. (1) 8423130 gasket. The cost of parts was $16.29 on November 3, 1969 when the kit was announced in EMD Pointers. This assumes the engine previously had the type of filter with eight nuts and studs, these are re-used to mount the new adapter.

I just received a SW9 with the screw-on style oil filters that you ask about. I can go check it out and send pics on Saturday.

Thanks for the part numbers PC, I will see what I can find. Might have to contact a recycler. I doubt Progress Rail still stocks those parts.

Dwa, thanks pics would be great too.

For what it's worth, Indusco Ltd. in Brick New Jersey Tel: 732-899-2660 shows that they have 10 of the filter bases in stock. They don't show the o-ring. I wonder if by chance it comes with the base or has changed numbers. Of course the filter itself is commonly available. The Baldwin part # is BF971. Good luck on your project.

I would be shocked if Power Rail didn't have this, if not, Hatch and Kirk?

I know our fuel transfer pump on our tank uses the same filter as our sw9. Very convenient.

I will call this week and order parts, I just thought posting pictures of the current setup and then adding pictures of the conversation later.

What kind of oil does this engine take?

I am sure others use other types of oil, but I have found a good SAE 30 or 40 weight oil to be sufficient in older EMD locomotives.

I know of some museums that use 15w-40 diesel oil as well, and haven't seen any real issues in decades. However these locomotives are only seeing 200 hours of operation a year, maybe.

If you really want to get specific with your oil distributor-

SAE Grade Engine Class 30 40
Viscosity,cST @40oC 135 180
Viscosity,cST @100oC 12.1 14.5
Viscosity Index 76 77
Flash Point, (COC) Deg F 465 480
Pour Point, Deg F -5 +5
TBN, ASTM D 2896 13 13
Ash, %wt. Sulfated 1.5 1.5
Zinc Content, ppm <10 <10
Gravity. API @ 60oF 27 24

We've used both Shell Caprinus and Brad Penn DDS Plus in our 567B. The price of the Brad Penn was $300 less per barrel through our local supplier. Both oils have less than 10 ppm of zinc, which is key.

One thing to keep in mind is the old style filter upper has the relief valve behind the large hex. These are prone to sticking and the result is typically a shattered secondary sight glass with the resultant fuel spill. Best to remove the shuttle and use modern 10 and 60 pound relief valves. The engine will continue to run with a shattered secondary sight glass until the tank is empty.

Thanks EBL,
I have heard of that happening but never the cause-
I will take precautions to keep that from happening.
