Post subject:  Minnesota iron range 0-8-0

Can anyone help identify this 0-8-0, displayed somewhere on the iron range in the late '60's? Just can't remember..

Wow, that is one sharp looking engine! But I gotta ask, what's with the headlight? Was that standard on those locomotives?

Thanks, Mr. Lambert, and the headlight is because the engine worked in an iron mine for it's last few years.

Actually, that headlight seems to have been popular on some modern steam switchers, including those in common carrier service. There are photos of modern C&O 0-8-0s with them, including a postwar series that was built with them.

Looks like N&W ordered the same lights when they built their copies of the C&O engines, though that's hard to see with the number boards they also had.

Thanks for the info and pix. I'd never seen that style of headlight before.
