Sad news from across the pond here as Sir William McAlpine, has died aged 82.

McAlpine was instrumental in rescuing the Flying Scotsman from being stranded stateside after the second US rail tour bankrupted previous owner Alan Pegler, in order to prevent an American consortium from purchasing her.

He also saved numerous other locomotives, built a private railway at his Fawley Hill (which included saving the signalbox from my home town after the railway was pulled up).

Was Chairman of the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway and helped to create Carnforth aka Steamtown, which was a large motive power depot now the base for West Coast Railway, and was a patron of the Swanage Railway Trust.

It really is a shame that he's passed on as we've truly lost one of the greats.

A true preservationist. His accomplishments during his time were without peer on either side of the Atlantic. He will be missed on many levels. Rob

Although he was "Lord" and "Sir William", most people still called him Bill.
What an extraordinary contribution he made.
When I win the $30 million Oz Lotto tonight, I'll attempt to emulate him to some degree.....
Cheers, Bob
