SAINT PAUL—The Minnesota Transportation Museum is thrilled to announce the newest addition to its collection; Great Northern SD-7 no. 558. This diesel locomotive is a generous gift from Cargill, Inc. This particular locomotive is the only Great Northern SD-7 to be preserved in a museum collection.

Great Northern 558 was built in March 1952, one of the first 20 SD-7s to be built. The locomotive served in Minnesota, in road service out of the Twin Cities terminal and in ore service out of Duluth/Superior. In 1983, Burlington Northern retired it from service and it remains largely in its original configuration.

Her Burlington Northern colors have held up well for a locomotive that likely was last painted in the 1970's (It was 1977 or 1978 when BN repainted their last active locomotive still in pre-merger colors).

Even if she got a fresh coat of cascade green on the eve of retirement (which isn't exactly unusual), that's still 35 years or so. The paint shop that did this one must've did their job right, unlike so many Conrail repaints of the late 70's and early 80's that often looked terrible in a few short months.

Did Cargill have an engine house for her when off duty, or perhaps repainted her in BN colors at some point (Like the LS&I did a few times with former BN GE's)?
