"Contemplating" You don't put out a press release to announce what you are only "contemplating" unless they are looking for incentives to keep the jobs there OR are looking for incentives from the other or another location entirely.

Are generators and traction motors still being made there?

In my opinion all you really need to do is decode some of the language in this press release to get what's up.

Cutting to the chase, the Chicagoland area and the state of Illinois better start ponying up a suitable package of incentives to keep the business there. And they better start to work on it rather fast.

The engines and the generators are still manufactured at La Grange (for now), the traction motor production there was discontinued many years ago.

So where are EMD motors made now?

Depending on type and model, EMD traction motors in recent years have been manufactured in Germany, Canada or Mexico.

For any who may be interested in the manufacturing process at EMD in the 1970s and 1980s, when essentially all of the locomotive was still built in the United States, there is going to be a multi-part series on EMD and its locomotive building operations, as they were in that time period. It will begin in the next issue of the R&LHS magazine RAILROAD HISTORY (Issue #218), due out in May. The series will extend through several subsequent issues. Persons who are on the membership list by March should receive Issue #218.

Recent discussions with persons who are well informed have indicated that there will likely be very little left of the former EMD operations in La Grange by the end of 2019.

Going....................going......................gone....................

Friends advise that the engine assembly and a considerable portion of parts manufacturing have been relocated now. To see what it looked like when more than 10,000 people worked in La Grange, see issues #218, #219 and #220 of R&LHS RAILROAD HISTORY. Almost a hundred pages of plant tour in the three issues.

It is possible that all manufacturing activity will be moved out of La Grange this year, leaving only administrative, engineering, and technical personnel at that location.
