What I took from the posting mentioning $1mil is a operational restoration is possible. It sounds like the money is already on hand by the sound of it.

This would appear to be where it is off to.........

http://www.aspencrossing.com/about

Uses part of the former CPR Eltham to Hays line according to my Canadian rail atlas.

Reading the article tells me, people want a better condition for the locomotive and somebody, or some group, appreciates it and has a vision for it. "Losing battle with the elements" and vandalism are both mentioned inthe write-up. Hello? Somebody finally gets it!

Sounds good for the Pacific, if nothing more.

5080 is going to Aspen Crossing Railway, south of Calgary, and will be restored to operation by Al Broadfoot. Al ran the BCR steam shop from 1974-2001 (Royal Hudson 2860), and later restored CP 2816.

I think it was the reporter who came up with the term. Actually any place with tracks is a "train-themed destination". CP's yard in Calgary is a "train-themed destination" for example.

As "70000" mentioned, It very clearly states where it's going.

Quote:
Ownership of the iconic landmark at the Prince Albert Exhibition Grounds was recently transferred to Aspen Crossing Railway Corporation - a train-themed destination outside Calgary.

And, at least in this case, that's another way of saying railroad museum/tourist railway etc.

Did 5080 ever get moved to Aspen Crossing? I read it was happening last May, but I haven't heard a thing since this initial post.

I messaged them on Facebook and just seconds ago received this reply: "We have no new updates at this time regarding Engine 5080." I wonder if they have sticker shock about paying for the move from BC.

Al Broadfoot has been posting short video clips on FB all day today. Mammoet is onsite and they are about to load the tender out on the first truck.

The project is underway.

5080 was loaded complete in one pick by two very large hydraulic telescoping boom cranes onto a heavy haul trailer and has left the fairgrounds within the last hour or so bound for its new home.

As of today, 20 March 2019...CN 5030 is cruising the Canadian prairies at 70 kph, daylight hours only. Will be at Aspen Crossing quite soon. Then the rebuild begins. The tender is about a hundred years old, and too far gone for service. It'll be replaced by an appropriate ..larger unit. The engine condition is rated about 8 out of 10. Which is pretty good for how long it sat outside at Prince Albert, Sask. The condition of the boiler will require removal of the boiler jacket etc. etc. The engine is worn...but not beaten to death. A very good candidate for rebuilding.

The 3 people in the photo with the number plate, are, left to right...Arnie Lindberg, who was the liaison person for Prince Albert council. We all owe him a debt of gratitude for helping this happen. Not everyone in Prince Albert was on-side about seeing the "town treasure" depart.

In the middle is Jason Thornhill, the new owner, and operator of Aspen Crossing...who is bankrolling the project.

On the right is Al Broadfoot. Legendary steam guru in Canadian Steam. (Think the Royal Hudson 2860 and CPR's 2816). He's the consultant and "finder of missing parts".

A big day for Canadian Steam.

She'll have a much better chance at restoration and maintenance at her new home. I'm certain she would have been nobody's favored feature as a rusted pile of metal parts in her old home. This has to be a good move.
