Words, music and photographs come together in a moving tribute to the Maine Central and the railroaders who made The Pine Tree Route what it was.

Wow! John Stewart was an American original, and a vital voice for people who built America with their hands. He gave the Kingston Trio a new "ring" and built upon their amazing success after founding member Dave Guard became disenchanted with the group.
Glad to see John mentioned in this forum. Thanks!

John Stewart appreciated the royalties when the Monkees turned his "Daydream Believer" into a hit, but he sure didn't appreciate the way they changed the lyrics. They pretty much emasculated it when they substituted "Now you know how happy I can be" instead of the original "Now you know how funky I can be".

He deserved to have a hit on his own, but it unfortunately eluded him.
"July, You're a Woman"; "Mother Country"; "California Bloodlines"; "The Pirates of Stone County Road"; "Wheatfield Lady". All good stuff. But unfortunately I don't think he ever wrote a railroad song.

His one close hit as a single was "Gold", backed by Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham. Of "Day Dream Believer", John said it paid for his house in Malibu, and then some!
In this article, I take it John was an inspiration, but not involved musically.
