Susan, I am very interested in the UP documents and would love to have a look at them. Not much in the way of technical data seems to be available for the UP steam turbine electrics. Maybe this info could be put together as a web archive for UP fans? Robert |

The section of the turbine, alone, is likely a major piece of significant documentation. The others that have been listed are significant. I thoroughly support having these files digitized at relatively high resolution and quality and posted where they can serve as a resource. Susan Yosten is familiar already to many PRR aficionados as having provided an enormous range of historical material unavailable from any other source. |

Bigboy, Overmod and others: Thank you for the support. I've set the UP file aside to take to work tomorrow and scan a few things to try to post here. Anyone have complete builders drawings for the steam electrics? Susan, Thank you for the scans. I have never been able to find any pictures of the cab interior of the steam electric. Now I can see that in controlling these locos that they are similar to a Milw EF4 electric locomotive in cab controls. Robert |

Hi Susan; This is incredible stuff. I have never seen anything like That is the first and only time I have seen the UP steam turbine locomotive with a "B"unit in the middle! I will be glad to help you with digitizing this if you want; but I would just put it up on Flickr. This is a McKeen car rebuilt to be more like a conventional gas/diesel-electric (note the different trucks). I am certain it has been documented in some of Keilty's 'doodlebugs' books but I don't have access to my library to confirm the details. This may very well be a previously unpublished picture. |

According to Keilty Union pacific #M-11 was McKeen #11 built in 1907. It was rebuilt by GE in 1925 and retired in 1942. |

Thank you Susan. I am really enjoying seeing how the UP steam turbines were constructed. Still hoping someone comes across a set of builders drawings for them? I would seriously consider a new build steam electric if I was a millionaire. It's a real shame one of them did not survive. Robert |

Robert---I'm glad you're enjoying the photos. I love the various locos on the shop floor of building 10. I know I have a book of approximately 4x6" blueprint-style drawings from the late 1800's of UP engines...shows length, weight, various capacities etc. as well as another one from more recent times, but until I get out to my offsite collection (hopefully this weekend) I won't hazard a guess as to the date or contents. The 1800's book appears to be an original, based on the paper looking like dark tobacco-stained parchment. Hopefully it will scan okay so you folks can tell me if you'd like to see more of it. Or a 'save your breath-we all have that already' is good to know too. That's the extent of my UP-specific collection. If you tell me, though, that the a UP loco is the same as one some other railroad had, I can look in the files for that other railroad and see what I have to share. Or to look for a diagram of a certain headlight or pony truck or other part that would be in the 'parts' file, or a specifically-numbered locomotive that is in the 'numbered locomotives' file. The GE collection goes back to around 1910 with a lot of 'trolley cars' too. Sorry, but as I learn I have to grab onto anything recognizable to start organizing the collection---refinements come with education. Susan Yosten Erie, PA |
