Post subject:  McKeen Boxcar History

Doing some winterizing work on the IRM’s McKeen boxcar recently I noticed the painted over reporting number of 72850. At least I was surprised as we always referred to it as UP-100,000. Indeed it is marked on the inside doors 100,000. Curious to locate more information on the car, I searched the original number. It turned up Railway and Locomotive Engineering May 07 article on Google books that had the builders story linked here.

We acquired the car from UP, located near Sherman Hill, in use as a grounded track maintenance shed. It came to us without trucks, couplers, draft gear, or any brake pipes or rigging. For now its a historic body on shop trucks. But I’m curious of a few details this group may be able to fill in.
It seems this was one of two prototypes first built by UP. Then followed on by more regular service cars.
What type are the original trucks?
Is this indeed the first all steel boxcar built by UP or possibly in the United States?
How many in this series were built for regular service?

Thanks, Buzz
