Hi
Once you read the article in the newspaper, first the reporter has no clue about a steam locomotive.
Second, the pilot has no clue on running a locomotive, he either released the engine brakes, and didn't know he did, or opened the throttle and didn't have the brakes on.
Luckily there was a derail switch before the main line, and it did its job.

And I'm so glad he hadn't "pressed the accelerator" after he "switched on the ignition". He could've stepped on the clutch and brake pedals and avoided the whole situation. Should've made sure the selector was in Park first.... Seriously, though, that is some bad reporting but it did make me chuckle with my morning coffee.

Well, at least we know we don't have the only country with news media that doesn't understand railroads, especially steam roads.

This is a better article- The others were nearly all based on a bad wire service article. Another article indicates that the engine will be repaired at Rewari Shed and will return to service within 15 days.

"It continued the run for about nearly five minutes, covering around 2 kilometers without me...." Truly a notable speed.

The thing about reporters that normal folks never seem to know is that they're writing a story about a steam locomotive today, something about farm subsidies tomorrow, maybe the new high school football favorite on the weekend, and who-only-knows what topic next Monday. heck, maybe all those stories had to be written from an idea today alone!
Granted, the internet has made fact-checking a little easier than it used to be for technical points, but you can't count on that even then.
There's simply no time to research stuff with the speed a writer has to crank out copy, especially a newbie one.
Then in this case, there's a likely translation issue to add to the mix.
I see this often for railroads and firearms. I worked for a newspaper for several years when I was a young man, and I used to correct things with the copy editors all the time as I was pasting up the copy. And most of the time, they'd go with what I'd told them as again, there wasn't any time to do otherwise.
