Asking for a friend:

Does there exist at any of the various rail museums/libraries any sizeable collection of public and/or employee timetables covering more than a single railroad?

I expect railroad-specific or state-specific rail museums or archives to have some set for their specialties. But is/was there any sizeable "national" collection donated to the likes of, say, the California State RR Museum, the Illinois Railway Museum, Barriger, etc.? I have to imagine that some epic collector donated, or at least offered, a complete collection to some archive or another.

If there's some online archive in progress, that might suffice.

The Temple (Texas) Railroad & Heritage Museum was given an extensive collection of employee timetables back in the 1990s. I recall being shown part of it in the late 1990s/early 2000s by the then Museum Director -- rows of file cabinets. I seem to recall that this consisted of ETTs from several railroads.

I think this is separate from the Santa Fe Railway Historical & Modeling Society archives that the Museum helps house. But the SFRH&MS has reprinted several years of Santa Fe employee TTs using the resources of this collection.

I am part of a informal group of Railroad data "Packrats", who have been scanning Timetables and other RR paper in our collections and sharing.

My personal copy of the archive has about 258,933 Files, in 5,119 Folders for 860 GB.

What in particular are you looking for?

I would say that the CSRM has ETTs of multiple railroads in North america. There online catalog is here http://csrrm.crewnoble.com/SearchETTMenu.htm but I don't know how often it is updated.

During a recent donation, they declined most of the AT&SF and SP material I'm getting rid of. They did take non-California titles, including:
Norfolk & Western, “Principal Freight Train Schedules,” May 1, 1980.
Baltimore & Ohio, Saint Louis Division Timetable # 44, April 28, 1946.
Baltimore & Ohio, Baltimore Division Timetable # 66, April 29, 1951.
Baltimore & Ohio Condensed Freight Train schedules September 1, 1967.
Boston & Maine Timetable # 79, October 29, 1961
Chicago & Western Indiana Timetable # 83, April 27, 1941.
Chicago & Western Indiana Timetable # 100, April 29, 1951.
Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Missouri-Kansas Division Timetable # 2, January 1, 1972.
Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Condensed Frieght Schedules, October 31, 1974.
Long Island Rail Road, General Orders 201 and 202, March 29 and July 27, 1995.
Missouri-Kansas-Texas System Timetable # 11, January 1, 1982.
Northern Pacific Railway Tacoma Division Timetable #77B, April 14, 1957.

Judging from this list, they collect a broad selection. I hope they have what your friend is looking for.

Pacific Northwest Railroad Archive has a pretty good size collection of timetables for the Pacific Northwest.

Check the Newberry Library in Chicago. I don't know specifically all that they have, but a lot of railroad material winds up there. When I was working for Rand McNally, they sent railroad material there after they quit printing the Handy Railroad Atlas. You can search their online catalog.

The Southern California Chapter R&LHS Railgiants Museum has ETTS from UP. SP. and AT&SF from the the late 50's to the early 80's. A member went to the yard office and collected the old ETTs when a new one came out. We have donated many ro other museum but still have a lot of these in our collection.
