I saw photos on a facebook group "Abandoned Rails" of the Santa Fe NW-2, Baldwin VO-1000 and an FM switcher. As well as what appeared to be an SP B-unit modified for snow service. All were loaded on flat cars. Anyone know where they might be headed?

They are going to the Museum of the American Railroad in Frisco, TX. If you have a paid subscription to the trainorders.com site, you can find a discussion with pictures at:

Unless its just going to be a dip job, they will need to do alot of work on that F unit to make it look semi-normal again..

This move has generated a great deal of discussion..and we all truly hope it's for the best.

At the end of the day...the question gets down to....does the Texas group have the wherewithal to restore them..?

The Sacramento collection has been deteriorating for a very long time.

Seen here behind Alco 9820...as far back as 1990..copper-thieves were already at work on RS1 2394. ....so big buck's involved.

No offence intended.... Is it fair to ask if they have a viable restoration plan...and this move is not from one junkyard to another.?

The museum was awarded a grant to move and restore the equipment formerly in the collection of the California State Railroad Museum.

At this time the Museum of the American Railroad boast a number of operational pieces, including the only operating Santa Fe Doodlebug that I know of. They've "restored' an F7 to Santa Fe colors, and are currently tackling the impossible task of restoring the Santa Fe PA to what they hope will be operational condition, and they're making decent progress too(as a side note I would suggest you all check the PA restoration out and follow it on Facebook). And let's not forget the task of moving all of this equipment out of Dallas and north to Frisco a few years ago. They've been busy laying track since then and are building what we all hope will be a fantastic museum for generations to come.

So yes, I think they have the ability to handle these four pieces of equipment.

OT, but how many of the original Santa Fe F-3/7/9s survived the CF-7 program, and if so where are they?

The F7A and F7B at CSRM, which are not to my knowledge being deaccessioned. Unlike the other diesels in the Santa Fe part of the collection, those two have spent time in the main display areas (inside the museum and right outside along the "boardwalk").

Someone can correct or confirm, but I recall those two were restored (returned to Warbonnet paint, etc.) by the Santa Fe years ago down in Sou. CA (at San Bernardino?).

Well depending on how you define "operating" the Santa Fe M.177 at Travel Town is now operating. The original Winton gas engine has run for years, and it has now recently moved under its own power. Still a lot of restoration work to do, in particular getting the electrically driven air compressor working so it can reliably stop, but the body has been painted and looks awesome. Lots of work to do on the undercarriage now.

Joshua,
That's a good link to the transportation and cosmetic restoration funding for the incoming artifacts.

Anyone know how I can get my hands on the Santa Fe 9820 ? Be happy to rebuild it for revenue service.

Those A & B units in Warbonnet are stunning! When were those photos taken? Are those units operational, or just cosmetically displayed?

You might want to check in with Austin Steam Train on the ex-ATSF 9842. It could probably use any help you'd be willing to provide.

I took those shots when visiting the museum in 1990. Don't know the present status.
