A well intentioned group decided since they could rebuild 1/8 scale steam locomotives they could do 1:1 locomotives as well. Sadly, they found you need money to put these things back together. Like Richard mentioned, members took parts home to work on them and those parts never returned. Throw in many legal battles and you had a real mess. In this case, a happy ending has happened.

We will install the last parts later this week and will put the front number plate up next Friday for a little party the Museum is having.

The entire cosmetic restoration took 6 weeks to complete.

Just for the record, including donations of materials and services, could you put a dollar figure on this restoration? I mean, how many locomotives are sitting in parks or museum lots needing this kind of attention?
Ultimately, I hope you can put a roof overhead within another year, or she may fade fast.

Jason,
I will be heading down to Nelsonville to work on HVSR 3 next Friday, so I will leave home early to attend the "grand unveiling" of the 2700. Looking forward to seeing this locomotive looking good after many years looking rather deplorable.

Richard, hope you are seated. This was a federally funded project so all labor was federal prevailing wage, plus lead paint abatement as well as flaggers due to be within 25 ft of an active mainline. ($900/day)

This restoration was not normal due to the lack of available parts and how stripped it had become. We did the work for $140,000.

We also used a high end automotive epoxy paint and primer. We tried to use as many "real" steam locomotive parts as we could get our hands on and budget would allow.

*a side note, included in the $140,000 was 350 feet of concrete sidewalk and landscaping.

A HUGE improvement ! Perhaps the members of the scale steamer group will be inspired to return more of the missing parts.

A HUGE improvement indeed!

As a C&O fan, the only thing better would be to see her--and her 11 sisters plus the 614--back in steam.

Yeah, I know, it's only a dream, but dreams don't cost anything!

Now THAT’s a cosmetic restoration right there. Fantastic job by you guys, that’s gotta be the best it’s looked since rolling brand new out of the shops, if not better.

I'm glad to see this locomotive get some much needed care after so many years. The work looks top notch. I hope the museum starts a fund raiser soon to get a roof over the 2700.

yeh, you don't need lagging on a cosmetically restored engine. Putting a jacket on like that looks good, other engines can just leave it off. An operating engine keeps it heated and dry, here we don't have that going for ya.

Perhaps people would be willing to donate some more of the missing items if a list were compiled of what was still needed. Here's what I see missing that would make it look even better:
1. A pair of locomotive class lamps "Pyle National with the lid on top"
2. The cast iron pedestals that the class lamps sit on
3. A pair of flag holders
4. A whistle
5. The builder's plates
6. Of course much of the throttle linkage is gone as well as the reverse gear.
Some of these items could be re-cast from originals and there are whistle groups who could make a new one for it.
What say you ?

I would put cosmetic replicas on it, even made from wood. 765 removes these in storage all the time.
