Post subject:  Youngstown Steel Heritage Events September and October

The Youngstown Steel Heritage Museum will be sponsoring two events this fall.

The Annual Fall Open House is Saturday Sept. 23 from 10 am to 4 pm. On exhibit will be the 260 ton, 4,000 HP Tod Steam Engine, America's oldest electric overhead crane, last of its kind GE 70 ton center cab locomotive, Kling type hot metal car, PRR shunter, about 100 tons of other misc. steelmaking equipment and of course the J&L 58 with its restoration nearly complete except for the boiler.

We will also be hosting the first Youngstown Steam School on October 14 and 15. This two day class will cover the basics of locomotive fire tube boiler design, construction and operation, with hands on demonstrations on a three year old 6 HP Advance traction engine. The Ohio Historical Boiler Operators test will also be administered to those wishing to take it. We will be using the Hocking Valley Steam School's curriculum and instructors and the certificate will carry that name. Cost is $50 per person and we provide coffee, donuts and lunch. Our "classroom" will be the space between the cylinders of the Tod Engine. Yes there is enough room there for that!

In Ohio, to obtain an Historical Boiler Operators License, one must attend the Steam School and undergo 100 hours of supervised operation of an Ohio historical boiler. Once J&L 58 is operational we will offer the ability to work off those hours operating that locomotive.
