Post subject:  OT - Older MS Office File Formats

For those of you who may have the need to open Word, PowerPoint, and Excel files in older formats, this Microsoft Article may be of interest. You need a computer with Office 2003 to be able to do this, it does not apply to later versions:

If you open the files and save them in Office 2003 format, they should then be accessible by later versions of Office and can be re-saved in current formats.

I have found that saving PowerPoint 2003 and earlier format presentations into PPTX format is very likely to change the proportions of photos. Also if you try to edit or change images in a file originally done in PPT and subsequently saved as PPTX they may be fuzzy or distorted when viewed as a slide show.

Another option - If you have PowerPoint Viewer 97 on your computer (which is unfortunately no longer available from Microsoft downloads, but may be available elsewhere), you can open older PowerPoint files, print them as a PDF, then sweep the text out of them with OCR and paste into a new PowerPoint file.
