I am trying to locate AMTRAK car #1591 ( ex-ATSF #1381). Is this car still in the system and where is it presently located?
Thanks,

Harry Nicholls

1982 to Kyle Railroad for use as work car, never used
1984 (Feb) to Dr. Dan Marnell
1987 (March) to San Diego Railroad Museum

Hope this helps

Harry Nichols ("ol' fuzzy money") asked about Amtrak 1501 ex ATSF 1381 (note he made a typo with the car number)

PSRMA says it has a sister car, Amtrak 1500, ex-1380.

Amtrak: By the Numbers indicates that both 1500 and 1501 were retired in Feb. 1981 and Oct. 1980, respectively, and no further information is provided.

Harry's post indicates that the number 1501 is in the Amtrak database (?). Does the car still exist somewhere? Or did he search for the wrong car number (1591)?

Amtrak 1591 is listed as ex-Southern 6004, retired Oct 1980.

I did some additional searching and found that Rainier Rails posted the following back in May 2014
Surviving AT&SF Lightweight Cars:

Quote:
#1381 San Marcial reconfigured in 1956 to 24 bunk baggage dormitory to Amtrak #1501. Wrecked in 10-1980.
So, is the carcass of the car still around?

As a matter of fact, this car did survive, relatively intact, until about a year and a half ago. It was on the ground in a farmer's field near Lawrence, KS. No trucks or much underbody equipment. But the interior was pretty complete. Eventually the owner died and the son got tired of looking at it, so it was scrapped on-site.
