A friend and I who stumbled on this thread, and were interested in acquiring this locomotive, called to inquire about its status about a month ago. It’s already been purchased by an individual, and is slated for preservation. That’s probably all I can really share on it without input from the new owner. But rest assured, it’s not going to the scrap bin.

For anyone interested in more details on the future of 4070, feel free to PM me.

Thanks

This was over 2 years ago, does anyone know what happened?
I watched "Silver Streak" recent for the first time in many years, it still holds up well.

Would it be, really?
How many people even recall that movie these days other than train fans and 70s movie buffs?
Sure anyone reading this thread or forum would love to see her preserved in the movie colors, but how much of the public would even care?
I've been told that the 'wreck scene' locos from the movie "The Fugitive" on the Great Smoky Railroad at Sylva, North Carolina are hardly the tourist draw they used to and people regularly now ask what movie that was as many had never heard of it (and that's an early 90s movie).

Bingo. You have to be born in the late 1950's or early 1960's and part of the disco, bell bottom generation to have been part of the mid 1970's movie generation.

Railroad preservation was built on personal memory; people who actually remember revenue steam as an adult are at least 80 now. The problem with basing anything on personal memory is everybody is subject to the actuarial tables.

Hello everyone. I am new to the forum but came here to try and confirm the history of a 1952 CPR locomotive that is currently on display in Medicine Hat, Alberta. It is currently in Riverside Veterans' Memorial Park and digging into the history, the archival news clippings and additional info say that 1424 was in Silver Streak. The article reads that 1424 was changed to 4068 for the movie then after the movie was restored before being sent to Medicine Hat in 1985. This doesn't line up with the movie as the CPR engines were 4070 and 4067.

If anyone has any additional information it would be very helpful. Just want to find out if the Medicine Hat CPR locomotive is the 'real' 4070.

Thank you all for your help!

Here is the news clipping from 1985 when the CPR locomotives arrived at the park in Medicine Hat.

I'm not sure if this will help to answer your question, but the listing in the Canadian Trackside Guide (page 3-46) states:

ex. VIA 1424 1985, exx. CP 4068 1978, exxx. CP 1424 1965, nee CP 4068 1954.

Also on display at the same park is 1418 (ex. VIA 1418 1995, exx. CP 1418 1978, nee CP 4060 1955).

I believe 4067 was the trailing unit in the film and was scrapped many years ago. Neither was 4070, which is hopefully still out there and was reported here a few years ago as being saved, but no updates have been seen since.

4070 is still at East Broughton, Quebec.
