I'm not normally one to dredge up old posts - but what is the latest status of GW #51? I've tried reaching out to the Hudson Terminal folks, but they're busy running a rail operation, so I haven't heard back (completely understandable). So I'm bringing my question here. Does anyone have more up-to-date information? Is the engine still steamed up and brought out once per year?

Latest post that I can find on RYPN is here: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=34966

Although we're also trying to clarify what happens to Birmingham's possessions following his passing

I can tell you that the GW 51 is safe and sound.

The Hudson Terminal folks don't want any pictures or publicity. I'm guessing that some of their customers may have security concerns. At any rate, I know them and do not believe they have this policy without there being a good reason for it.

However, if I knew anything, I'd keep my mouth shut unless they said it was OK to spread the word. I suppose it's alright to tell you that the engine has only a few days hot time since her complete FRA certification, but has not been steamed lately. Otherwise, it isn't my announcement to make in the first place.

Hope this is helpful.

Thank you for putting our concerns to rest

We still await the day we’ll be able to see her in action for ourselves

GWRR 51 is the engine that pulled an excursion over the D&RGW Tunnel District once to the East Portal wye and return to Denver back in the 60's, correct?

Yes it was. Happened in 1965 I think and the boiler jacket at that time, was painted a light green color.

Tom -

Light green you say? Would have liked to see that. Did you get a photo?

Hi Les:
Slides of this excursion were taken by the late John Hungerford, I have his collection.
I'll try to get a print off to you when this Winter is over.
