Does anyone know what the designed rpm of a 24 volt, 500 watt stones turbo is? It is not stated or given in any of Stone's maintenance manuals, the danish manuals, or on the brass inf tag on the turbo itself.

Quite odd in comparison to Pyle where that info is readily available.

These guys might know, and they have a link just for questions: http://prestonservices.co.uk/item/stone ... ator-sets/

Here's a maintenance manual for those doing a search on this topic at a later date: https://www.southdevonrailwayassociatio ... Manual.pdf

This film, "A Steam Train Passes" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-uFJs-xoTMM has the clear sound of 3801's Stone's turbo-generator starting up at about 4 minutes in. The turbo whine starts up at about 2000Hz (120000rpm) and levels off at 3000Hz (180000rpm). Which does seem pretty fast! Maybe the whine is the brushes bouncing on the commutator, or the steam hitting the turbine blades, not the shaft rpm.

I can't find the power rating of the turbo fitted to this loco in my references, but I still hope this helps a little bit!

Very interesting to compare this to Pyle National, etc. I'm pleased you don't have a Lucas to contend with.

180,000 RPM ? Let's lower that to 1,800 or 3,600 RPM . Possibly the frequency you are getting is 50 or 100 turbine blades passing the steam nozzle each revolution.
